Task intelligence: TechWolfs exploration on the bridge between skills and work
Bridging skills and tasks to redefine work with AI.
The global economy is at a tipping point, driven by the rise of AI and automation. By 2028, Gartner predicts that a third of enterprise software will automate tasks and decisions, with McKinsey estimating this could add 1.2% to annual GDP growth. Yet, this immense potential brings a pressing challenge: as technology advances at breakneck speed, how can organizations ensure their workforce evolves just as quickly? The conversation has shifted beyond simply automating repetitive tasks to fundamentally rethinking how tasks connect to workforce skills.
This challenge has driven organizations to seek smarter, more dynamic ways to align work with the right skills. TechWolf is rising to the challenge of this moment by exploring Task Intelligence—the next frontier of workforce transformation. By deeply analyzing how tasks and skills interact in real time, we’re ensuring that our clients don’t just adapt to the future—they help shape it.
Why Task Intelligence?
In every organization, tasks are where work happens—where value is created, and impact is delivered. Yet, as technology accelerates and the nature of work evolves, a growing gap has emerged between the skills people have and the tasks that drive business value. Bridging this gap is no longer optional; it’s a necessity for organizations striving to remain competitive in an era defined by rapid change.
The numbers speak for themselves: According to the World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report 2023, the demand for new skills continues to rise as technology reshapes industries, further exacerbating the existing gap. In the UK alone, the International Labour Organization found that nearly 29% of the workforce was either over or undereducated for their roles, a clear indicator of widespread skills misalignment.
As Jeroen, our CTO and co-founder, puts it:
“With tasks, we are exploring a logical expansion of our existing skills intelligence. By understanding the underlying work more deeply, we are able to handle skill data and the underlying drivers more intelligently.”
Key questions
Automation has already demonstrated its value in reducing repetitive workloads and increasing efficiency, delivering tangible results across industries—for example, achieving cost reductions of 30–60% in operations centers, while also significantly improving delivery quality. But that’s just the beginning. The next phase of workforce transformation requires a deeper understanding of the connection between tasks and skills:
- Which tasks create the most value?
- Where can automation unlock human potential?
- How do tasks evolve over time, and how can skills evolve alongside them?
"Skills tell us what someone can do," says Jeroen, "but tasks explain why those skills are needed and what value they bring to the organization. Task Intelligence bridges this gap, providing critical insights to align work with organizational goals, streamline processes, and unlock productivity."
Leading by doing: we had a look at our own teams
At TechWolf, we’ve experienced the challenges of evolving work firsthand. Within our own Professional Services team, the constantly shifting nature of tasks underscored the need for transformation. To address this, we turned to our proprietary AI models to map the tasks being performed, identify the skills required, and uncover opportunities to optimize workflows. This deeper task-level insight became a game-changer. It allowed us to shift repetitive, manual tasks like reporting, dashboard creation, and data handling into strategic opportunities, freeing up time for higher-value work.
As part of our ongoing R&D efforts, we are actively testing Task Intelligence internally. We have connected the JIRA instance used by our professional services team to track work, and are leveraging our AI to link each unit of work to both the relevant tasks and skills. This way, we can monitor what work was happening and which skills are being leveraged to get it done. This view is combined with our ontology, which adds an understanding of which work can be automated, as well as cost data. By bringing all this together, we have been able to identify and tackle the top opportunities for automation, as well as track the impact of our efforts. This has resulted in:
- Saved $76,000 in productivity gains—equal to one full-time employee.
- Unlocked new opportunities to focus on strategic, high-value work.
- Identified a shift in the skills needed within the team, revealing that overly technical skills were becoming less critical for success. As a result, we were able to adjust our hiring and development strategies, making it easier to attract suitable candidates.
Insights on the tasks
By focusing on not just the what but the why behind skills, we’ve demonstrated the transformative potential of Task Intelligence to empower teams and drive meaningful change.
As Yasamin Karimi, Our VP of Product, explains:
“Task Intelligence is all about smarter work. The value can be enormous: aligning skills to tasks transforms how teams operate. Thanks to our existing AI infrastructure, TechWolf is in a great position to dive into the world of tasks.”
Powered by our proprietary AI models, this exploration has enabled us to go beyond skill identification, uncovering actionable insights that focus on the tasks driving organizational success.
Cedric Vandamme, VP Professional Services highlights the bigger picture:
"At TechWolf, our customers come to us to tackle business problems. In today’s economic environment, where the pressure to achieve more with less is greater than ever, a breakdown of the company strategy into the jobs to be done—and how it maps to specific tasks and skills—is a game-changer. It enables a more effective transformation of work processes and significantly enhances the scalability and impact of productivity efforts such as GenAI automation initiatives”
Opening the conversation
TechWolf has always been about leading the conversation—not waiting for the future to arrive, but actively shaping it. Exploring Task Intelligence is part of that responsibility.
We’re not here to hype trends. We’re here to make sure that when our clients ask, “How do we map tasks to skills?”, we’re ready with answers backed by data and experience.
As Jeroen says:
“At TechWolf, innovation means action. We explore these topics not because we’re selling something, but because it’s our job to lead.”
